Success in XCOM 2 isn’t about raw firepower — it’s about synergy, planning, and risk management. Squad composition and strategy can mean the difference between a flawless mission and a total wipe. Whether you’re battling Sectoids or Chryssalids, building an effective team is critical to survival.
First, you need a balanced class setup. A typical winning squad includes:
- One or two Rangers for close combat and flanking kills.
- At least one Specialist for healing, support, and hacking.
- A Sharpshooter to provide long-range overwatch or crits.
- A Grenadier for area damage and cover destruction.
Each role brings value — don’t underestimate support classes. Specialists can prevent deaths with timely heals or turn enemy mechs against their own team. Grenadiers soften clusters of enemies and open up shot opportunities by leveling terrain.
Cover usage is everything. Keep your soldiers behind full cover and advance methodically using overwatch. Never dash into unknown areas without clearing sightlines — many ambushes occur due to fog of war mistakes.
Don’t forget equipment. Upgraded weapons, armor, and utility items like mimic beacons or EMP grenades can change the outcome of a tough mission. Train and rotate soldiers to avoid losing your best squad to a single unlucky crit.
Finally, build your base wisely. Prioritize Resistance Comms, Power Relays, and Guerrilla Tactics School to maximize strategic flexibility.
In XCOM 2, even a perfect plan can go sideways — but with a strong squad and smart decisions, you’ll outthink the alien menace more often than not.
